Spring is in the Air

Spring is in the air, and this warm weather makes most of us want to get outside and be more active. For those who have been active throughout the winter this may be less daunting, but for those of us who are once again lacing up our sneakers/cleats here are some tips to avoid overuse injuries:

● Remember that “no pain, no gain” does not apply. Listen to your body!

● The 10% rule is a good one to follow - do not increase activity more than 10% each week...this goes for running/walking or any activity. Although this may seem slow, it is a great way to increase activity safely.

● Always warm up, this can be a slower walking pace or a more dynamic warm up.

● Incorporate strength training, flexibility/mobility, and improve core stability to help minimize overuse injuries.

● Use ice for aches and pains after exercise.

Seek the advice of a physical therapist with an exercise program or sport to prevent or address chronic, recurrent or acute injuries.
