What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy or Radial Pressure Wave Therapy (RPW) is a non-invasive modality used to treat muscular pain, and improve joint movement. It utilizes acoustic (sound) waves to penetrate dysfunctional tissue and stimulate the body’s natural healing response. A hand-held applicator provides mechanical energy to the target tissue to increase circulation and reduce pain.
What Conditions Can Shockwave Treat?
Shockwave has been shown to be effective in treating a number of conditions, including:
- Achilles’ tendinopathy
- Acute muscle strains and tears
- Bursitis
- Calcific tendonitis
- Chronic stress fractures
- Lateral epicondylitis (better known as tennis elbow)
- Medial epicondylitis (better known as golfer’s elbow)
- Myofascial trigger points
- Patellar tendinosis
- Plantar fasciitis
- Tendinopathies
What Does Treatment Feel Like?
Shockwave takes only a few minutes per site, but can take longer if a larger area is being treated. It is normal to feel a little discomfort from the mechanical soundwaves, but most acclimate quickly to the treatment and have no discomfort. Some may have a little ache after, while others feel that their movement is immediately improved. You will be able to return to all your activities as usual after treatment including any physical activity or sports.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
The number of treatments needed largely depends on your response to the treatment, but most will notice a benefit with 5-6 treatments and 4-7days between sessions. However, you may notice some relief after your first treatment. Your therapist will help you to determine what is best based on your response, diagnosis, and chronicity of the condition.
