Physical Therapy for the Temporomandibular Joint
The Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) includes the two joints connecting the jaw to the skull. These joints are used for all mouth and jaw functions including speaking, biting, chewing, and yawning. When a problem occurs with the TMJ, these everyday functions become very painful or impossible to perform and can greatly affect your quality of life.
Common symptoms of TMJ include clicking while moving jaw, grinding or gnashing teeth, headaches, and pain while chewing or biting into food. Depending upon the cause and dysfunction, treatment may include exercises, postural exercises, relaxation techniques, retraining breathing habits, correcting improper movement patterns, manual therapy, soft tissue techniques, intraoral or extraoral, joint mobilizations, or dry needling.
